Hull: East Park (2 miles)

Monday, 30th September 2019

After missing my Walking Group walk on Saturday due to a gyppy tum and yesterday absolutely tonking it down with rain, I was feeling the need to squeeze a little walk in between chores and general other commitments.

Luckily, the weather was really nice today so I combined a trip to the bank with a nice mooch round East Park in the sunshine.

I decided to park in East Park and walk to the bank.  Stinky, traffic polluted Holderness Road just does not do it for me in terms of a stroll so I got a bit of a wiggle on for the functional part of my walk to the bank.

Banking sorted, I resisted the urge to look in all the tat shops on my way back to the car and decided to save my legs for a nice walk round the lake in East Park instead.

Glad I did.  It was lovely, and really quite peaceful because the kids are still at school.  It was nice to smile and say hello to people without either being ignored or getting a grunt in return (needless to say, most of the folks I spoke to were retired and enjoying a stroll themselves).

Anyway, some pics....

Though the lake looks manky, it's obviously got plenty of food in there for ducks!

A right nice little mooch in the best of the weather.  Not long after I finished it went all overcast and dull.  The total distance of the walk was 3.6 miles but the mooch round East Park is about 2 miles.  I must remember this one for the depths of winter when I need to get out but my local paths are all under water or slick clay mud.

Thanks for looking 😊

WI Walk - Cloughton to Hayburn Wyke (4.4 miles)

Sunday, 15th September 2019

Despite not really having enough sleep I still awoke before my alarm and enjoyed a leisurely cuppa and shower before packing my case and meeting everyone in the main building for what is pretty much a 3 course breakfast - delicious as always.

After breakfast we went back to our rooms to finish getting packed up and check out, meeting at the cars to start our walk.

We walked straight from the hotel down the road to the clifftop, then walked off the end of it!

This bit of coastline is very uppy and downy - seems like a perfect excuse to pose for a group photo!
Enjoying the views!

Another breather at a conveniently placed bench
with fab views towards Scarborough

Luckily we all enjoyed taking in the views and deeply breathing all those wonderful brine-y sea smells...

...and one without everyone in the way of the view!
Our plan was to head down to the pub a short distance away.

Pit stop at the pub!

From here we returned to the hotel along the Cinder Track.  A predominantly tree lined disused railway.  Very flat and not a great deal in the way of views.  Not particularly my cup of tea but it gave us chance to all walk together and chat.

We had a quick foray into the Secret Garden before heading back up to the hotel for our Sunday lunch (only 2 courses this time), after which we jumped into the cars and headed home... via Tiffins Tea Room in Old Bridlington!

Thanks has to go to Mo for organising the weekend and Karen and Gill for driving.  A smashing weekend with perfect weather.

WI Walk - Flamborough to Danes Dyke (3.2 miles)

Saturday, 14th September 2019

It was our walking group's annual weekend away this weekend and we all met up at Mo's to arrange car sharing.  There was 7 of us so we could fit comfortably in 2 cars.  Gill and Karen had the cars with the biggest boot space so they drew the short straw!

We got set off at around 11.30am and headed up to Marton Tea Rooms for a cuppa.  From there it was a short drive back into Flamborough, parking on one of the side streets near the village green for the start of our walk.

The sun was shining and the wind was pleasant, a bit blustery at times but not cold.  Perfect walking conditions for me.

Heading through Needles Plantation
The woodland took us all the way to Danes Dyke.  We opted to follow the cliff top rather than head down these steps as we would have needed to return up and even worse set of steps.
Steps down into Danes Dyke "proper"
Our cliff top walk brought us out to a lovely viewing point, looking along to Bridlington:

Same view without everyone's heads in the way!
Shortly after that we headed to the coastal cliff top and found a convenient place for our lunch.  I only had an apple as I knew we'd be feasting on a 3 course meal later that night.

View from our lunch stop - looking back towards Danes Dyke

Easy walking due to the lack of rain
We headed back inland at Flamborough and had a short walk round the streets.  Some nice stained glass windows dotted around, along with some wonderfully old stone cottages.

Although Flamborough Castle might be a little beyond repair and renovation!...

After our walk we headed briefly to South Landing to the Living Seas Centre before heading to North Landing for the obligatory post-walk cuppa.

The cliffs along this part of our coastline never cease to impress me.  This is the bluest I've ever seen the sea and people were making the most of the warm sunshine.

We finally arrived at Cober Hill (our overnight accommodation) at around 5.30pm and I decided I'd not done enough walking for the day so I toddled off for a roam over the stubble fields before they got ploughed.
Sun, Sea and Straw!
Our evening meal was at 7pm and, as always, the food was delicious.  As we neared the end of our meal the full moon popped its head up - Elaine mentioned it was a Harvest Moon so I went outside to try and get a pic.

Full moon
The pics never turn out quite how you see them but that was my best effort.

We retired to the lounge (which we had to ourselves) and proceeded to sample Penny's home-made Sloe Gin.  Mixed with Prosecco it's really rather nicshhhh (hic!).

At about midnight we headed to our beds.  I didn't have my east facing room with a sea view this time - I overlooked a quiet courtyard instead.  Perfect for a peaceful night's sleep.
